Spain does not yet have a national animal protection law; each autonomic region has its own law. There is a growing demand from animal protection organisations for a national law. In some of the autonomic regions, the law is quite out of date and does not comply to the European standard. But even more recent legislations seem to concern more the obligations of pet owners, then the rights of the animals and their welfare. But a greater problem is that very often even the existing law is not applied and there is very little knowledge or information about it amongst the population.

In spite of all this, it is extremely important to know the law and insist in its application.

The police-department for environment and animals SEPRONA is obliged to follow any denouncements and take action if the law is violated. Even if sometimes it seems useless, it is extremely important to denounce animal mistreat. But to get a result, it is important to know the law.  

Unfortunately we do not have English translations of the Animal Protection laws in all autonomic regions of Spain.
